An-Najah National University is one of the most significant Palestinian universities in the number of students and its academic programs. The university has dramatically impacted graduating and qualifying thousands of graduates in various majors and specialties. It also directly affects the development and growth of the city of Nablus on the economic and urban levels. This university went through long historical stages before it developed into a university as follows:The first stages of establishing the university began in 1918 AD. It was in the form of Al-Najah School, and it included students from the city of Nablus and other Palestinian regions, and some Arab students, most of whom were from Algeria.In 1941 AD, the school developed into An-Najah National College. In 1965 AD, it became an institute for training teachers, until 1977 AD when it became An-Najah National University. Since that date, the university began expanding on different levels until its students reached nearly 24,000 students distributed over 11 colleges, including 114 academic programs for bachelor's degrees, 70 master's programs, nine doctoral programs, and 11 institutes and research centers.An expansion in the university buildings has accompanied the development of the number of students and academic programs, and it currently includes the old campus, the Al-Junaid Campus (the Academy), Hisham Al-Hijjawi College, east of the city, and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Khadouri, Tulkarm. In addition to the university hospital in Asira Street, north of Nablus, the university buildings include several stadiums, sports facilities, a closed arena, and a library. The number of books in this library exceeds 269,000, and half a million electronic copies of books of various courses.The university joined the Association of Arab Universities, and obtained membership in the Mediterranean Universities Union. The university is chaired by the Board of Trustees, composed of prominent legal personalities. The university's presidency runs it, and it has become attracting students from all Palestinian governorates, from the Palestinian cities inside the Green Line, and some foreign students.The university presented several Palestinian academic and leadership figures, and had an essential role in the Palestinian national movement.
