The Roman Amphitheater

Site description: It is located outside the Old City, opposite the National Hospital on the Nablus-Tulkarem road, specifically on the eastern side of the Hippodrome. The site was discovered in 1980, and its construction dates back to the third century AD. It is a circular-shaped building with an arena in the middle of it in the form of a wrestling ring. Although this building is similar to the Roman theater, it differed in planning, as the circular amphitheater was closed entirely. Still, the theater was in the form of three-quarters of a circle. In terms of its function, the gladiatorial battle, sometimes led to death, took place between man and man, or between man and predatory animals. In contrast, the theater was reserved for theatrical performances and celebrations.
